voici le transcript de deux scènes où ce nouveau personnage apparait : Abbott walks a PATIENT out as Linda absently looks through cabinets, nosing around. The PATIENT COUGHS. DR ABBOTT: ...I'll also prescribe you an antihistamine for that cough. LINDA: There's no need for that. DR ABBOTT: Excuse me? LINDA: You've always overprescribed antihistamintes. You could treat his cough with nettle and sepa. DR ABBOTT: Nettle? I pull that stuff out of my yard. LINDA: Herbal remedies can be very effective in a non-productive cough. DR ABBOTT: Says who? LINDA: Um, The New England Journal of Medicine. DR ABBOTT: I hardly think that -- LINDA: --August 1997, a meta-analysis of sixteen studies conducted on the effectiveness of herbal remedies in treatment of allergies. Or did you not happen to catch that issue... Take that. DR ABBOTT: I must have fallen behind. LINDA: (to the patient) You can get the herbs at Holly's Flowers. Just off Forest Avenue. DR ABBOTT: Yes, and while we're at it you can cure her eczema with some amethyst and intense concentration on her elbow chakra. LINDA: (to the patient) You'll have
to forgive my brother, he's intellectually arrested in the late fifties.
Wardrobe too-- DR ABBOTT: I'm backwards because I actually believe in the scientific method? LINDA: No, you're backwards because you fear change like it carried the plague. DR ABBOTT: I change constantly! LINDA: You've eaten the same breakfast every morning for the last thirty years, Harold. DR ABBOTT: That's not tr-- LINDA: --farina with seasonal fruit. Try and Egg Beater and we'll talk. DR ABBOTT: (sulky) I like farina. SCENE 2 INT. MAMA JOY'S DINER Edna and her daughter LINDA peruse the menu until the waitress arrives. LINDA: What are you having, Mother? EDNA: I'm thinking about t he meatloaf. You? LINDA: Maybe shrimp Louie... WAITRESS: can I take your order? EDNA: Turkey sandwich on white. No mayo, no sprouts. As the waitress turns to Linda, LINDA: Turkey sandwhich on wheat, no tomato, no mustartd. The waitress leaves. LINDA: Brass tacks, Mom. I skipped the funeral, I didn't kill Dad. You can start talking to me again now. EDNA: A birthday party you skip. Your father's funeral, you make that little bit of extra effort. LINDA: If it was humanly possible to come I would have. EDNA: You were a prisoner of war, I guess? LINDA: I'm not accountable to you, mother. EDNA: Or to anyone, it seems. LINDA: I'm here. Right now. Are you going to keep pretending I'm gone? EDNA: Here's what I don't understand. You do a crummy thing. Time passes. Then you expect people to just magicaly forgive you over time. Why? Nothing's changed. LINDA: I told you. I just could't get there. (beat) We've never been close and maybe we never will be. The only things we used to ever have to tak about were the details we knew about each other's lives and now we don't even have that. But I'm your only daughter and if you don't start talking to me now, you may go to your grave without having known me. (beat) So what's it gonna be, Mother? Are you going to get over this? EDNA: We kept a chair for you. At the gravesude. Just in case. Even though you said you wouldn't, I was sure you would show. LINDA: Well that's your problem isn't it? The waitress arrives. WAITRESS: All right, one turkey with no-- LINDA: (getting up) I'll take mine to go. SCENE 3 INT. LINDA'S OFFICE - DAY Linda is setting up her office, emptying boxes, etc. when Andy knocks and pokes his head in. Before he can even say a word: LINDA: Can you haul that box over here for me? The one keeping the door open. DR BROWN: This one? Sure... Andy struggles with it-- LINDA: Can you manage it? DR BROWN: No problem. So, are we unpacking? LINDA: I am. Are you helping? 'Cause that'd be great. She slides a box over to him, indicating: Help. LINDA: You didn't by any chance bring any food with you. Balance bar? DR BROWN: I don't eat balance bars. LINDA: You're kidding? Have you ever tried one? DR BROWN: No, but-- LINDA: So you can't really say you don't eat them. Just that you've never tried them. See the difference? DR BROWN: I do. Would you like to have dinner with me? LINDA: I just asked for a balance bar. I don't need a whole meal. Although if you're picking something up-- DR BROWN: No, no. I don't mean right this minute. I mean, in general. Would you like to have dinner? With me? Linda stops unpacking for a moment. Looksgenuinely perplexed. No judgement. Just stumped. LINDA: Are you asking me on a date? DR BROWN: Yes. LINDA: Oh.... I wasn't sure... She goes back to the unpacking, leaving Andy hanging there for a moment. DR BROWN: Um... You didn't actually answer. LINDA: Oh, I'm sorry. I mean to say "no." DR BROWN: No? As in ... NO? (mouthing the word no) LINDA: Sorry. Not interested. DR BROWN: I-- LINDA: You seem surprised. DR BROWN: I think I was expecting a polite excuse to buffer the blow. LINDA: Let me be explicit. You think the kind of medicine I practice is, at best useful in generating a placebo response in a limited number of cases. Something for people with minor, most likely stress-induced conditions. At worst, you think it's new-age crap. But you're too liberal to come out and say so, mainly because alternative medicine has recently gained popularity, making it harder to publicly criticize. Sort of like telling a racist joke at a formal dinner. So instead, you say: "That kind of thing doesn't work for me, but I know other people who've gotten a lot out of it. Why some of my best friends are witch doctors..." You assure the medicine won't work for you, even though you haven't tried it, because you don't think you're the kind of person who would respond to it. Why? Because you think you're too good for it. Word to the wise, Doctor Brown, condescension's a poor aphrodisiac. And besides that, I usually go for blondes.

Ephram straightens. Juilliard - Real Deal. Ephram: You're looking for me? James Geller: If you're the kid who played the Schubert Impromtu Number 3 at the Denver Rep teen recital last year. I heard all about you. Ephram: Is it okay if that freaks me out a little. James Geller: (smiles; takes Ephram's
book) Ephram: Checking out SAT vocab lists. Turns out there's a lot I don't know. I've been at it for two hours and I'm still in the B's. James Geller: You know most performing arts schools don't even require the SATs. I like to think the time you waste on entrance tests is time you could be spending on your instrument. Ephram: You want to say that into a tape recorder for my dad? James Geller: People forget how rare this kind of gift is. Do you even realize the confluence of events required to get a great player? The right ear is one in a million, and the mechanical skills to let it shine, one in a fifty thousand. For them to come together in one person... do the math. Ephram: If I could I wouldn't have to study for the SATs. James Geller: A kid with those kind of odds shouldn't have to. He hands the SAT book back to Ephram. James Geller: Liste, why don't you play something for me tomorrow. Not an audition or anything, just to let you know where you stand. Interested? Ephram: Sure. Anything specific? Geller opens his bag, hands him some sheet music at random. James Geller: You know this one? Eprham: Not yet. James Geller: I'll see you tomorrow at three. Geller goes.
Amy pulls Tommy out before he can use his manners. Irv folds his arms, stares at Edna like she killed puppies for a living. EDNA: Don’t even start.
INT. COUNTY HIGH. LOCKER ROOM. NIGHT. Gavin tapes his knee, alone with his thoughts, when a spiffy Andy finds him. DOCTOR BROWN: Half hour to curtain. Now a bad time? GAVIN: (grins) C’mon in. DOCTOR BROWN: I wasn’t sure you wanted to see me. GAVIN: I don’t blame you, Doc, you’re just worried about me. I appreciate it. DOCTOR BROWN: How are you feeling? GAVIN: Good. Strong. DOCTOR BROWN: That’s good. I know you’d hate to disappoint everyone. Your parents, your coaches, you’ve got a lot of fans too . . . This town can put a lot of pressure on a kid, I’ve seen it. Gavin’s look says he’s right. GAVIN: I guess. DOCTOR BROWN: You’re so afraid to disappoint them you can’t even see how bad it’s gotten. GAVIN: I’m not sick. I only threw up a few times, just for the tournaments. DOCTOR BROWN: I don’t believe you. (beat) I don’t even think this is about wrestling anymore - - maybe it was at first. By the time you got scared about what you were doing you couldn’t stop, your body was doing it for you. He gauges Gavin, feeling he’s getting through. DOCTOR BROWN: (CONT’D) You can stop the cycle right now, Gavin. You don’t have to win. You don’t even have to compete. The thought settles over Gavin’s face, and we hope Andy’s getting to him. GAVIN: You want me to walk away from the meet? Why would I do that? DOCTOR BROWN: To show them you care more about your life than a game. GAVIN: (and then) You don’t get it. I trained hard to get here. I used to be fat and slow, I screwed up everything. No one knew me - - and they were right. I was nobody, I was like everyone else. This is the first glimpse of the real Gavin anyone’s had in a long time. As bad as Andy thought it was, it’s worse. GAVIN: (CONT’D) Now? I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in, I fight better, I study better, girls look at me . . . I can’t lose. Why should I give that up - - so I can be like them? Gavin can hear the mounting CHEER from the gym. It feeds him. He faces a stunned Andy, putting back on his shy-boy face. GAVIN: (CONT’D) Don’t worry about me, Doc. I’m fine. He walks right past Andy to the door. Andy watches him head down the narrow hall and into the light beyond - - out into the MURMUR which quickly becomes a ROAR.
- Une conversation entre Ephram et Madison :
INT. COUNTY HIGH. FRONT DOOR/HALLWAY. NIGHT. The CHEERS ECHO as Ephram and Madison make their way in. EPHRAM: You sure you’re okay with this? MADISON: Can’t wait. They head down a hall full of PARENTS, STUDENTS and snack tables. He spots ******* Wiley, wearing a familiar (and recently stolen) BROOKLYN sweatshirt. MADISON: (CONT’D) Isn’t that your jacket? EPHRAM: I lent it to him. He holds open the double doors leading to . . . INT COUNTY HIGH. GYM. CONTINUOUS. EPHRAM: Hey Senor Walker. SENOR WALKER: **Horale, Senor Brown,
que hace? (recognizing her) Madison? I haven’t seen you in ages. MADISON: Oh my god, Josh. EPHRAM: Josh? - Et une autre : MADISON: (laughs; then) How about we figure us out before we force ourselves on the world? Ephram might not like it, but he understands. Fair enough. EPHRAM: so can we please kiss and make up already? I’m on a clock. He leans in. Madison pulls back. MADISON: Inside. She picks up her flowers and pulls him in. That’ll have to do for now. - Une conversation entre Andy et Gavin : EXT. COUNTY HIGH. LOCKER ROOM. DAY. Gavin shows a move in slo-mo to a TEAMMATE when Andy finds him. Gavin nods for his Teammate to give them a minute. DOCTOR BROWN: So you’re going to State. You made it. GAVIN: Looks like it. Andy has the Denver paper with him - - a big color picture of Gavin with his arm held aloft by his coach. DOCTOR BROWN: Paper says you’re the first from Peak County in forty some years. Need a copy? GAVIN: My dad got a bunch. DOCTOR BROWN: (then) I wanted to talk to you. GAVIN: I thought we did that. DOCTOR BROWN: No. I tried to before your match, but that wasn’t you I was talking to. That was your disease. You do have a disease Gavin. GAVIN: I just won - - I don’t need a lecture. DOCTOR BROWN: People don’t gain strength from bulimia, they get weak. They get ulcers and heart disease and they die. GAVIN: Thanks, but I don’t need your help. DOCTOR BROWN: I wish I could help you. I’ve done all I can. I told what I know to your parents, your coaches, your school. It’s up to them to care enough now. And it’s up to you to accept their help. GAVIN: I don’t need their help either. DOCTOR BROWN: Yes you do. Your eating disorder is going to be the fiercest opponent you’ll ever face. You might never beat it. Even worse is that not a single person in your life right now is telling you that. All they want is for you to win a State, the whole town does. (and then) Well then let me be the lone unpopular voice out there when you wrestle. I’ll be rooting against you. I hope you lose. A long beat. Gavin glares. GAVIN: I won’t.

2.11 : Family dynamics : |
And I can respect it. But please don’t make it about me. I don’t want to be the poster boy for pissing off Mom and Dad. Amy leans over, and kisses him. AMY: That’s what this is about. That and the free Skittles. Tommy is expressionless for a moment, then breaks into a slow smile, which releases the tension for Amy. Phew. AMY: (CON’T) Anyway, it’s not like I’m really living with my grandparents. This is all temporary until my dad and I reach some kind of understanding. And I’m totally willing to compromise. I figure I’ll let them keep the car, as long as I get to keep you. It’s all part of the negotiation, you see. TOMMY: I see. And you’re sure you’re getting the better end of that deal? AMY: I don’t know. I might miss the seat warmers, but . . .
INT. DOCTOR BROWN’S OFFICE. EXAMINATION ROOM. NIGHT. Andy has finished the blood test, tapes a cotton swatch on Helen’s inner arm. She’s not making this easy. HELEN: I really don’t need a lecture. DOCTOR BROWN: I’m not lecturing. I’m just saying maybe there’s a reason you didn’t tell me you were married. HELEN: You didn’t ask. How about that? You think Jerry goes to the urologist and says, “Doctor, before we begin, I have a wife.” It’s not a big deal. DOCTOR BROWN: IVF has helped a lot of people, and I’m not knocking it. But truthfully - - thankfully - - you don’t need it. You’ve got a husband who loves you, who wants to have a baby with you. HELEN: And we will. DOCTOR BROWN: Put yourself in his shoes. We’ve all said things in the heat of the moment we might like to take back. HELEN: Excuse me, there was no “moment.” We talked about it more than once, and he agreed. DOCTOR BROWN: Because he knows how important it is to you. I’m not saying you’re wrong for wanting to keep your promise, but no one would blame you for changing your mind. He just might be getting through to her. But then: HELEN: I’ve worked too hard and invested too much to stop now. I’m sorry Jerry’s having mixed feelings, but a promise is a promise. I’m having this baby. She gets up. HELEN: (cont’d) And I don’t appreciate the two of you ganging up on me and Ted like this. Andy watches her go. Dumbfounded.
Et une deuxième scène à ce sujet : Andy, Helen, and Jerry sit uncomfortably with one another as Edna enters, carrying a Fed-Ex Pak of little frozen Teds. EDNA: Sperm’s here. HELEN: Oh, good. I’ll take it. Jerry squirms as Helen tears into the Pak and pulls out the canister. It looks like a mini-scuba tank. DOCTOR BROWN: Careful. That’s liquid nitrogen. HELEN: I wonder if they’ll get his chin. He had a great chin. . . JERRY: Oh for god’s sake . . . I can’t do this. There’s just no way. HELEN: Jerry - - - JERRY: It’s like I don’t even exist! DOCTOR BROWN: (re: the canister) Maybe you should give me that - - JERRY: Our baby this, our baby that, we’re gonna work together, raise it as a team. It all sounds great, but you know what? It’s not our kid. I’ll never be able to love it like it’s mine, because it’s not. If that makes me a horrible person, I’m sorry. That’s how I feel. HELEN: Honey, I know you’re insecure, but this is something I need to do. I made a promise. And so did you. JERRY: Well, I take it back. DOCTOR BROWN: Guys, please. Let’s all take a deep breath . . . JERRY: I’m outta deep breaths. You’ve got a choice to make, Helen. It’s me or him. . . Or them! With that, Jerry storms out. Helen looks at Andy, at a loss. DOCTOR BROWN: It’s your decision. Whatever you want to do, I’ll help you. Helen considers her plight… it’s harder than she thought. HELEN: I thought I had room for both of them. Does that make any sense? DOCTOR BROWN: I stopped trying to make sense of grief a long time ago. It’s funny, it’s been almost two years since my wife died, and there’s still not a day goes by that I don’t think of her. Little things, a song on the radio, a phone call, even a smell. My daughter does this thing with her hair, it’s completely unconscious, I’m sure, but every time. . . it’s like Julia’s standing right there in front of me. HELEN: If you could have seen Ted’s face, when he made me promise. . . DOCTOR BROWN: No one would blame you if you changed your mind, Helen. You’re a wife before you’re a widow, and no one can fault you for recognizing that. (then) We all make promises to people we love. But letting go is not the same thing as forgetting. Not even close. This settles. Helen dries her eyes. She stands up and starts to go. (Pour un résumé complet voir rubrique episode )

2.12 :Controlling Interest : |
DOCTOR BROWN: I was planning to run a few basic tests. Then something that was mentioned - - or tather something that was conspicuously unmentioned when you were last here - - made me look again. MRS. COOPER: Is there something wrong? DOCTOR BROWN: I thing there may be cause for concern about Gavin’s health and I want him to be here when I say this. (then; to Gavin) I think the reason you passed out the other day wasn’t over training but because you induced vomiting to make weight. Your electrolyte level plus the enamel damage shown in your dental records makes me want to ask you if this has happened more than once. Gavin looks to his parents, embarrassed. GAVIN: I’ve only done it a couple times. When I thought I wouldn’t cut weight. DOCTOR BROWN: I’m afraid the lab report suggests it’s more chronic than just a couple of times. His parents were not expecting this. They suffer it like an accusation. MR. COOPER: My son’s not some girl making himself puke because she reads too many fashion magazines. The kid eats, believe me. DOCTOR BROWN: I’m not accusing anyone of wrongdoing, Mr. Cooper. And I understand the desire to win. But he already dropped two weight classes this year, and I fear this could be the start of a dangerous trend. Andy’s concern is met with a long silence. Mr. Cooper turns to his son. Mr. Cooper line crossed out here – unreadable. Gavin line crossed out here – unreadable. He means it too. Mr. Cooper waits for the door to close. MR. COOPER: Gavin is an incredible athlete. Possibly the best wrestler his age and weight in the country and he’s got a shot at proving it this Saturday. Now I know it’s popular to say winning isn’t important anymore - - but it’s not true. It’s how they decide who matters. DOCTOR BROWN: Gavin’s health is what matters. All the physical evidence I have points to the possibility, if not likelihood, of an eating disorder. Mrs. Cooper looks concerned. But her husband has heard enough. MR. COOPER: I’m telling you my son is fine. All he needs is your signature to say you agree. DOCTOR BROWN: I’m sorry. I can’t sign anything that will allow him to compete under these circumstances. MR. COOPER: I’m sure there are plenty of doctors out there who will. Mr. Cooper holds Andy’s stare, letting him know just how little he can do. Off andy, PRELAP THE ROAR OF THE CROWD. COACH SPITZER (PRELAP): We can all learn something from Gavin . . .
Autre scène de l'intrigue médicale : DOCTOR BROWN: Mrs. Cooper? MRS. COOPER: I hope I’m not catching you in the middle of something. DOCTOR BROWN: I was just doing some reading. They take seats. Andy can see she’s rattled. DOCTOR BROWN: (CONT’D) What brings you here? MRS. COOPER: I probably should have been here months ago --- It’s strange how something right there in front of you doesn’t make sense until someone points it out. What you said about Gavin, things to look for - - DOCTOR BROWN: You noticed something? MRS. COOPER: I’ve been noticing things for months. I don’t know what to think. DOCTOR BROWN: Just tell me what you saw. MRS. COOPER: After school started, I found all this food in his closet, cereal, candy, everything he loves but wouldn’t even let me bring in the house. I thought he was just keeping it for after matches, as a reward . . . Another time he came home with his eyes all puffy and bloodshot, like he’d been in a fight. He told me he accidentally put in contact lens cleaner instead of saline - - (then) I had to call a plumber to fix the piping in our bathroom it was worn down so badly. (as it sinks in) How did I not see it? How could I let this get so far? DOCTOR BROWN: You don’t think about these things, not with your own kids, not with boys. MRS. COOPER: I thought I was lucky, it’s not as if he has a problem with drugs, or drinking. I thought, it’s only food. How bad could it be? DOCTOR BROWN: Have you spoken with your husband? MRS. COOPER: He doesn’t want to hear it. He’s so proud of Gavin, how well he’s done. He said if Gavin needs any help we can get it for him after the season. (then, frightened) Can you help him now? Please. DOCTOR BROWN: All I can do is talk to him. She may have been hoping for more. But she’s grateful. MRS. COOPER: It’s more than I’ve done. Off Andy, hoping it’s enough. . .
Bright et Ephram au sujet de Madison : EPHRAM AND BRIGHT - - Watch the ruckus from a table. Ephram was done an hour ago. EPHRAM: Is he still talking? BRIGHT: Get over yourself. And don’t tell me you’re not going to the meet. EPHRAM: It’s a sporting event. BRIGHT: You should ask Madison to come with you. (off Ephram’s look) You’re the one bitching how she doesn’t want to be seen with you, ask her to be seen. You’d probably get your clothes stolen a lot less. EPHRAM: Sure, she’s just dying to get back into high school.

Why don’t you get back to me after you have that conversation. DOCTOR BROWN: Listen, just because I’m a dad doesn’t mean I can’t get some of the stuff I want. LINDA: Maybe you should start smaller, though. Want some golf clubs or a plasma TV. He smiles, and takes her hand. This is real. DOCTOR BROWN: I have this picture in my head that won’t go away. I see you and me sitting at the kitchen table, wearing our pajamas, sipping coffee, reading the Sunday paper. LINDA: Nice picture. DOCTOR BROWN: So let’s try it. I don’t want to wait anymore. Linda’s heart is melting. Then, from the car: DELIA: (O.S.) Is it Nemo!?!? Off Andy and Linda, their five seconds of privacy officially up. Maybe a sleep-over’s not such a bad idea after all…
A pile of books bisects the couch, keeping EPHRAM and MADISON’S hands off each other. Both read textbooks. Madison highlights aggressively. EPHRAM: Kind of defeats the purpose if you highlight the whole book. MADISON: Are you just a piano genius or do you know anything about music history? EPHRAM: Some, what’re you on? MADISON: Atonal music theory. Please tell me you can explain it. EPHRAM: Shoenberg, 12 notes, sounds like someone threw an M-80 in the orchestra pit. MADISON: I’m not sure I can use that in a paper. Ephram’s about to kiss her, but they’re interrupted by an EH-HEM from Madison’s roommate CARRIE. Carrie hates everyone. CARRIE: Did your underage boyfriend finish my Fudgsicles? EPHRAM: I took one. CARRIE: (ignoring him) Does he not understand the concept of labels? The Post-It clearly said “Carrie” right on the box. MADISON: Why don’t you ask him directly, as he’s sitting right next to me? CARRIE: He touches another fudgy pop, and I’m calling Child Services. She goes, a slug-trail of venom behind her. EPHRAM: I can’t believe I was once mad at you for not letting me meet your friends. MADISON: She’s not my friend, she’s my roommate. EPHRAM: Are you stuck with her for all of college or can you switch roommates, like majors? MADISON: The good news is she’s going to visit her boyfriend in Boise this weekend. Which means he’s either fictional or crazy.
